Lateral hip pain refers to pain on the outside of the hip and is a common condition we treat at our East Auckland physiotherapy clinic.

This condition is most commonly associated with gluteal tendinopathy or greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS). While often labelled as bursitis, research shows that tendon irritation is usually the primary cause.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain on the outside of the hip

  • Pain when lying on the affected side

  • Night pain disrupting sleep

  • Pain with walking, stairs, or prolonged standing

  • Discomfort when standing on one leg

  • Pain that may spread down the outer thigh

    What Causes Lateral Hip Pain?

Lateral hip pain typically develops due to a combination of factors:

    Tendon Overload

Repetitive activities such as running, walking, or gym training can overload the gluteal tendons.

    Muscle Weakness

Weak hip stabilisers (gluteus medius and minimus) increase strain on the outer hip.

    Poor Movement Patterns

Hip drop during walking or running increases tendon stress.

    Compression

Positions like lying on the hip or sitting with legs crossed compress the tendons and worsen symptoms.
