Anterior Hip Pain – East Auckland Physiotherapy

What is Anterior Hip Pain?

Anterior hip pain refers to discomfort at the front of the hip or groin region. It is commonly seen in active individuals, runners, and people who perform repetitive hip flexion activities.

At our East Auckland physiotherapy clinic, anterior hip pain is most often linked to:

  • Hip flexor overload (iliopsoas tendinopathy)

  • Hip joint irritation or impingement (FAI)

  • Soft tissue strain from overuse or poor movement control

Common Symptoms

  • Pain at the front of the hip or deep groin

  • Discomfort when lifting the knee (hip flexion)

  • Pain with running, kicking, or stairs

  • Stiffness after sitting for long periods

  • Clicking or catching in the hip (in some cases)

What Causes Anterior Hip Pain?

Anterior hip pain is usually caused by a combination of factors:

Hip Flexor OverloadRepetitive activities such as running, kicking, or sprinting can overload the iliopsoas tendon.

Prolonged SittingLong periods of sitting can increase hip flexor tightness and sensitivity.

Hip Joint Impingement (FAI)Structural or movement-related impingement of the hip joint during flexion or rotation.

Weak Gluteal MusclesReduced hip stability increases load on the front of the hip.
